School-Based Waivers

Applicants who do not qualify for the GRE or Diversity Program waivers can request an application fee waiver directly from the school they will be applying to.

Stanford schools currently granting application fee waivers include:

  • Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences Waiver

  • Graduate School of Education Waiver

  • Engineering Waiver 

  • Medicine Waiver (PhD only)

  • Humanities & Sciences Waiver (PhD & DMA Only)

  • For Business (PhD), Law,and Medicine-MD,go to the school website.

Fee Waiver Description

The Office of Multicultural Affairs is providing a set number of fee waivers to students who would like to apply to graduate programs in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and are in financial need. 

  • You should only request a School-based waiver if you do not qualify for the GRE or Diversity Program Participation fee waivers.

  • All fee waiver applications must be completed 10 business days prior to your department deadline. We will do our best to review and respond to your application within a week of receiving it.  

  • As we are paying for each request that we receive, please only sign up if you are sure you will be applying this application season.

  • Please note that a limited number of application fee waivers are available and applications will be reviewed on a first-come basis.

  • Acceptance or denial of your application for a fee waiver does not affect your likelihood of admission into a graduate program. 

  • If the application fee waiver is approved then the applicant will be sent a code to enter in the payment section of the online application.

  • No refund will be given if you apply for a fee waiver and pay the application fee instead of using your application fee waiver code.  If we deny your request for a waiver, we will instruct you to pay the fee.

  • The questions below are included in the application, do not send your essays directly to the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Waiver Application Essay Questions:

  1. Briefly describe your prior research experience

  2. In one paragraph, please describe how your interests and background (in terms of culture, race, gender, ethnicity, (dis)ability, socioeconomic status, work/life experience etc.) would contribute to the diversity (broadly defined) of students pursuing graduate degrees in Earth, Energy, & Environmental Sciences at Stanford.

  3. Please describe in 250-500 words why you believe you are eligible for and should receive a fee waiver. Can you further expand on financial need and why this waiver would be helpful?

The Stanford Graduate School of Education is committed to increasing the diversity in the field of Education. With this commitment in mind, we will be able to offer a limited number of fee waivers to applicants experiencing financial hardship. Preference is given to low-income, first generation and underrepresented minority US domestic applicants.

  • You should only request a School-based waiver if you do not qualify for the GRE or Diversity Program Participation fee waivers.

School of Medicine - Biosciences PhD Programs Fee Waiver

Fee Waiver Description

Applicants who are part of a group that the NIH considers to be in need of a special recruitment and retention plan in order to diversify the biomedical sciences workforce (http://grants.nih.gov/training/faq_diversity.htm#a3) are invited to apply.

  • You should only request a School-based waiver if you do not qualify for the GRE or Diversity Program Participation fee waivers. 

  • All fee waiver applications must be completed by Monday, Nov. 25th, 11:59pm PST.  We will do our best to review and respond to your application within 10 business days of receiving it.  

  • As we are paying for each request that we receive, please only sign up if you are sure you will be applying this application season.

  • Please note that a limited number of application fee waivers are available and applications will be reviewed on a first-come basis.

The Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences is committed to increasing the diversity of doctoral programs in the Humanities & Arts, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences. Preference is given to low-income, first generation and underrepresented minority students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  Fee  Waivers are only available for students applying to doctoral programs (Master's applicants are not eligible).

  • You should only request a School-based waiver if you do not qualify for the GRE or Diversity Program Participation fee waivers.

  • All fee waiver applications must be completed 10 business days prior to your department deadline. We will do our best to review and respond to your application within two weeks of receiving it.  

  • As we are paying for each request that we receive, please only sign up if you are sure you will be applying this application season.
